Introduction

Melbourne is a small and attractive market town in a delightful part of South Derbyshire, England. It is about eight miles south of Derby and two miles from the River Trent. It contains a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants for the tourist.

There are many pleasant places to walk in the town and the surrounding rolling countryside. Melbourne Parish Church has been described as a "cathedral in miniature". Melbourne Hall is open in August to the public and its gardens are open from April to September.

Calke Abbey and Staunton Harold Hall are within 3 miles of the town. The nearby villages of Ticknall, Swarkestone, Stanton-by-Bridge, Kings Newton, and Breedon-on-the-hill are also well-worth visiting.

 

Carnival 2012

This year's carnival will take place on Saturday July 14.
The theme will be the Olympics 2012.

 

Late Night Shopping - 25 November 2011

Late Night Shopping

Melbourne's evening begins at 5.00pm with a lantern procession into the market place followed by the Christmas lights switch on by Lord Kerr from Melbourne Hall and the Carnival Queen.  The late night Victorian themed shopping evening will be accompanied by a market and seasonal entertainment, including local bands and choirs. Melbourne Rugby's U13 needs your help

Melbourne RFC under 13's are looking for help. The Under 13's have won a free kit from Samurai as part of a competition through AEG. They are in the final 50 teams and voting is now taking place to decide the team that should get a training day with the England squad!

A public meeting is to be held to explain the future management of the Leisure Centre on Monday, February 6 at 19:30. The Centre is due to pass to the management of Melbourne Community Centre Limited (MCCL) on 1st March or soon after.

 

New Tea Rooms at Milton

The Swan Inn Milton

In these difficult times for pubs it is good to see a village local diversifying in order to keep trading. The Swan Inn at nearby Milton has now opened a tea rooms (called Cygnets) in one of the bars meaning that the premises are now open during the day.
